Born in South Korea, James and his brother, Dave, were adopted by an American family when he was 9 years old.  Their father enrolled them in a traditional Tae Kwon Do school in 1989, when James was 15, so they would be exposed to Korean culture.

After earning his 3rd Dan (degree) black belt in Tae Kwon Do, James switched styles in 1996 and began studying Hapkido.  He now holds a 3rd Dan black belt in Hapkido and is currently working toward earning his 4th Dan.  James has also trained in Shotokan Karate, Ju Jutsu and Tai Chi.

James began instructing in 1991 and has taught Tae Kwon Do, Hapkido and Shotokan Karate at various schools.

From 1989 until 1994, James competed and placed in local, state and national martial arts tournaments in forms, sparring and weapons.

In addition to his training under Master Joe Borucki at Global Martial Arts Academy, James has had the opportunity to train with a number of other martial arts Masters and Grandmasters including Grandmaster J.R. West, President of the United States Korean Martial Arts Federation, Dr. He Young Kimm, founder of Han Mu Do, Hapkido Grandmaster, former Korean national Yudo champion and noted martial arts historian, Grandmaster Bong Soo Han, "The Father of Modern Hapkido," and Master Geoff Booth, President of the Australian Hapkido Group.

While earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Health and Physical Education at Frostburg State University, James headed the school's Martial Arts club between 1998 and 1999.

James is married and, during the day, is a Personal Trainer at Lifebridge Health and Fitness Center in Pikesville, MD.
